Selena Gomez brought something deeply personal to the Rare Impact Fund Benefit on Wednesday night at the Hollywood Palladium: a brand-new honor called the Katherine Short Legacy Award. It’s named for Martin Short’s daughter, Katherine, a clinical social worker who devoted her career to helping people through their hardest moments. She died by suicide on Feb. 23 at 42 after living with borderline personality disorder.
Martin Short accepted the award with a speech that left the room emotional. He spoke about his daughter’s long fight, and about mental health deserving the same seriousness we give any other disease.“She did the best she could until she couldn’t,”he said, adding that his pain over losing her will always be present in his heart.
The Rare Impact Fund, founded through Selena’s Rare Beauty, works to expand mental health resources for young people, so Katherine’s name now lives on in that mission. If you or someone you know needs support, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text, 24/7.
