Two Elgin Public Schools buses were involved in a multi-vehicle wreck Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. on U.S. 277 near the Interstate 44 overpass. According to early reports, a black SUV exiting I-44 pulled out in front of a westbound bus, setting off the crash. Emergency radio traffic mentioned possible injuries, but it’s still unclear whether anyone was hospitalized. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating.
Superintendent Nate Meraz said students were checked for injuries on scene and kept on air-conditioned buses until their parents arrived to pick them up. The district’s notification system alerted families not long after the crash.
What has Elgin and Lawton-area residents talking is the timing and the location. This is the second wreck involving Elgin school buses in 2026, following a March 2 crash that injured 14 students. Both happened along the same U.S. 277 corridor near the I-44 interchange, which serves as a daily route for commuters, military families heading to Fort Sill, and school buses alike.
