That’s the reality Crown Princess Mette-Marit faces after her son, Marius Borg Høiby, was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday following a rape conviction handed down by Oslo District Court.

The 29-year-old appeared via video link for the verdict, which capped off a six-week trial that exposed a pattern of serious allegations. Judge Jon Sverdrup Efjestad convicted Høiby of assaulting former girlfriend Nora Haukland, one of four women he’s been ordered to pay compensation to. While he was acquitted on two separate rape charges, the single conviction carried enough weight to send him behind bars—and a two-year restraining order now shields one of the victims from any contact.

For Norway’s royal family, this lands differently than a typical high-profile conviction. Høiby is Mette-Marit’s son from a prior relationship, not a direct heir to the throne. That distinction matters in terms of succession, but it doesn’t shield the Crown Princess from the very human cost: watching your child be held accountable for serious crimes in a very public courtroom.
