Rep. Ogles Blames Staffer for Anti-Gay Tweet, Gets Called Out by Fellow Republicans

When a controversial tweet lands you in hot water, the classic move is to deny, deflect, or disappear. Rep. Andy Ogles took door number two this week—and it’s not playing well, even among his own party.

On Tuesday, the Tennessee GOP representative’s account posted a message declaring that homosexuality has no place in America, paired with a jab at Pride Month disguised as“Happy Nuclear Family Month.”The tweet went viral fast, then got deleted faster. But by then, the damage was done. Ogles’response? He claimed he wasn’t even at his phone. While he was working on his farm, according to his statement, a member of his communications team posted the“stupid, hurtful”message without his knowledge or approval. The staffer, he said, has been reprimanded.

Here’s where it gets interesting: his fellow Republicans weren’t buying it. Rep. Mike Lawler, also a GOP congressman, wasted no time calling Ogles a“f***ing idiot”for alienating fellow Americans with the rhetoric. Not exactly the party unity photo-op most would hope for. Even Sen. Ted Cruz, hardly known for waffling on cultural issues, pushed back—telling reporters that the behavior of consenting adults is their business, full stop.

The whole episode raises an uncomfortable question about accountability in the age of social media. Whether the tweet came from Ogles himself or a staffer authorized to speak on his behalf, the message still went out under his name to his followers. Delegating a communication strategy is one thing; delegating your values is another. And the fact that multiple Republicans felt compelled to distance themselves from the sentiment suggests the GOP base isn’t as monolithic on this issue as some of its loudest voices like to pretend.

For Ogles, the real test won’t be whether his team believes his farm-work alibi. It’ll be whether voters in his district think their representative should have better oversight of what’s being posted in his name—especially on issues this personal and this divisive.
