2026 Emmy Awards Split Across Three Nights: Here's What's Actually Getting Aired (And What Isn't)

The Television Academy just dropped some major changes for the 78th Emmy Awards coming in September 2026, and the shift is pretty significant. For the first time, the awards are stretching across three separate nights instead of one big televised event. The main broadcast on Monday, September 14th will air on NBC from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and feature only 19 major award categories. That means 102 other categories are being awarded during pre-telecast ceremonies on September 5th and 6th that won’t have the same on-air spotlight. Mariska Hargitay from Law&Order: SVU is hosting the main event, bringing some serious star power to the broadcast.

The controversial part of this restructuring is what’s getting bumped from the main telecast. All seven music categories are going to pre-telecast, along with major variety special awards. That includes the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show, Grammy Awards, Golden Globes, Oscars, and Tony Awards in the live variety category, plus Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour finale and Wicked: One Wonderful Night in the pre-recorded variety category. These are some of the biggest entertainment events of the year, yet they’re not getting the prime-time treatment. The Academy also moved five other categories from main broadcast to pre-telecast this year, including writing and directing awards for limited series and movies.

The strategy seems designed to keep the main broadcast shorter and more focused on attracting viewers in an era when traditional television ratings continue to decline. By concentrating on fewer categories during the primetime slot, the hope is that people will actually tune in instead of giving up halfway through. Whether this approach actually works remains to be seen, but it definitely signals that award shows are continuing to evolve. Are you planning to watch the Emmys this year, or does the new format change how interested you are in tuning in?
