Remembering Makenzi Kern: Funeral Services Set for NBA Star's Fiancée's Late Friend

The tight-knit circle surrounding NBA player Tyrese Haliburton is preparing to say goodbye to someone who meant the world to his fiancée, Jade Jones. Makenzi Kern, whose sudden passing earlier this month sent shockwaves through their friend group, will be remembered at services scheduled for later this week at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home in Omaha.

Kern and Jones shared a bond that stretched back years—both were cheerleaders at Iowa State University and remained inseparable after graduating. When Jones planned her bachelorette celebration in St. Barts, Kern was there. Tragically, on June 8, Kern died from health complications while attending the getaway. The family has been clear that foul play, drugs, or alcohol had no role in her death, offering some measure of clarity during an unimaginably difficult time.

Visitation will run Friday, June 26, from 3 PM to 7 PM, followed by a memorial service celebrating her life on Saturday, June 27, at 2 PM. The Kern family is asking that those who wish to honor her memory consider donations to causes that held special meaning for Makenzi—a fitting tribute to someone who dedicated much of her life to public service, having worked at the YMCA of Greater Omaha.

Following the tragedy, both Jones and Haliburton shared heartfelt tributes. Jones called her friend“a light in this world,”while Haliburton wrote,“We will always love and miss you Kenz. Forever thankful for you.”The question of whether the couple will attend the funeral remains unanswered, but their words make clear how deeply Makenzi was loved and how profoundly her absence is felt.
