Texas has a new attorney general-elect, and his resume has a line you’d never expect to find next to“veteran litigator.”Nathan Johnson, a state senator, won the race this week and takes office in January 2027. Before politics, though, he composed the musical scores for 67 episodes of Dragon Ball Z and five movies in the 2000s, including The World’s Strongest, The Tree of Might, Broly — Second Coming, Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon.
His path to this point is a full remix: a B.S. in physics from the University of Arizona, a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and at least 433 authored bills since joining the legislature in 2019. On the anime work, Johnson said it gave him a creative outlet and a cultural connection, joking that if you grew up watching Dragon Ball Z, you might know him better than you think.
The election itself was historic, with Democrats flipping seven Senate seats and nearly 30 House districts nationwide. But the story everyone’s sharing is the composer credit. So we have to ask: did you grow up on Dragon Ball Z, and can you hear his scores in your head right now?
