Jamar Goff, the 23-year-old foster son of Ree and Ladd Drummond, has been sentenced following his September arrest in Birmingham, Alabama. A judge handed him a 48-month suspended sentence for second-degree assault and a 24-month suspended sentence for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He was also placed on 12 months of supervised probation, ordered to complete a substance abuse evaluation, and required to submit to random drug testing. The judge released him and banned him from the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus.

The charges stemmed from a September incident in which officers found Goff sleeping near a campus fountain without a shirt. He allegedly said he was waiting to sell someone methamphetamine, fled, and later struck an officer with an open-handed palm strike at a local hospital. He had been arrested on four charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer.

The Drummonds became Goff’s foster parents in 2018 when he was a teenager, and Ree has publicly described him as part of their family, saying she writes about him because after a year and a half in their house, he became“an inextricable part of our wacky family.”The sentencing puts a public spotlight on a private struggle, and it raises the question a lot of families face: what does accountability look like, and what does a second chance actually require? We want to hear from you. Do you think the sentence fit the situation?
