Paul McCartney is not letting Hollywood get away with shrinking him. The Beatles legend revealed on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast that he personally texted director Sam Mendes after seeing an early still from the upcoming Beatles biopic where Paul Mescal, playing McCartney, appeared noticeably shorter than Harris Dickinson’s John Lennon. His message was direct:“Sam! Smaller? Don’t do this!”McCartney explained that he and Lennon were actually the same height in real life, while Ringo Starr was slightly shorter. Mendes reportedly attributed the apparent gap to the actors’stride pattern in that particular shot and sent over another photo where the two appear equal.

This isn’t the first time McCartney has pushed back on his on-screen portrayal. He also took issue with the 2009 film Nowhere Boy for depicting him as wimpy and smaller than reality. Clearly, the man keeps receipts on his own legacy. Mendes’ambitious project features four separate films, one for each Beatle, all set to arrive in April 2028. Mescal has already met McCartney, learned Blackbird from him, and will perform his own vocals in the film.

So while the height debate might seem trivial, it says a lot about how protective McCartney is of the Beatles’story and how hands-on he’s been with this production. Fans are getting a biopic with the actual legend watching every frame. What detail from a music biopic has ever bugged you the most? Drop it in the comments.
