Trooper Dustin Tiner of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol was driving home from a construction shift on October 12 when a county radio call changed his evening. A gunshot victim had been reported in Creek County, and Tiner realized he was closer to the scene than the deputies responding. He turned around and went.

He arrived to find a teenager with a critical accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the left leg. Tiner packed the wound and applied a tourniquet, keeping the situation stable until paramedics arrived. Then he followed the ambulance to the hospital, where he helped notify the teen’s parents. The attending physician described his wound packing and tourniquet work as outstanding and said the teenager will make a full recovery.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol praised Tiner’s quick response and dedication, and the story lands close to home for families around Lawton and Fort Sill. It’s a reminder that knowing basic emergency care, like how a tourniquet works, can be the difference between crisis and recovery.
