Nirvana Wins Video Vanguard Award at 2026 VMAs: Krist Novoselic Says It's All About Authenticity

Nirvana is officially a Video Vanguard Award winner. Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear took the stage at the 2026 MTV VMAs to accept the honor after an introduction from Chuck D and an archival video featuring Kurt Cobain. It marks the first time a band has won the award since Duran Duran in 2003, putting Nirvana in a category that’s stayed almost exclusively solo artists for over two decades. Their VMA history runs deep: three consecutive Best Alternative Video wins from 1992 to 1994 and a handful of performances that are still talked about today.

Novoselic kept the speech focused on why any of it still matters. He said the band’s music has a life of its own and that Nirvana continues to resonate because people are still hungry for authenticity, something real and uncompromising. He closed with a line about Kurt:“Kurt would’ve loved that legacy.”The moment capped a strong stretch for the surviving members, who performed Nirvana songs with guest vocalists at FireAid 2025 and at SNL’s 50th anniversary concert, introducing those songs to audiences born long after Nevermind.

The Vanguard Award recognizes artists whose music videos and visual performances reshaped the culture, and Nirvana’s case is tough to argue.
