New Hulu Doc Exposes the Dark Truth Behind 2004's 'The Swan'

If you were glued to Fox in 2004, you remember‘The Swan’— a show that promised total transformations and delivered a beauty pageant nobody saw coming. What you probably didn’t know is what was allegedly happening behind the cameras, and a new Hulu documentary called‘The Swan: Behind the Mirror’is finally telling that story.

Former contestants describe being stripped of mirrors, pressured into eight to fifteen plastic surgeries each, and given almost no post-surgery care. Some say they were forced to work out while still healing. Kari Bravata says she almost died from complications, and another contestant discovered cancer during a procedure while producers reportedly reacted with excitement. The show’s dentist later lost her license due to negligence and excessive treatment, and many of the women are still dealing with lasting health issues.

Director Erin Lee Carr calls it one of the most sadistic reality shows of all time. The creator and the Fox executive behind the show both declined to be interviewed.
