Mystery Deepens: Personal Trainer Elena Moore's Autopsy Reveals No Obvious Cause

When a body is found, the autopsy usually offers answers. In the case of Elena Katherine Moore, South Carolina personal trainer, it’s raised more questions instead.

Moore, 39, disappeared two weeks ago after leaving Planet Fitness and heading toward a wooded area. Her husband reported her missing the next day, triggering a search effort that culminated days later when authorities located a body in that same wooded area, wearing clothing that matched what Moore had on when she vanished. The body was confirmed as Moore on Friday, June 20th.

But here’s where the mystery deepens: the preliminary autopsy conducted Saturday revealed no obvious cause of death. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher found no bruising, cuts, gunshot wounds, stab wounds, blunt-force trauma, strangulation, or any other external injuries. Nothing that would immediately explain how a fit, active woman ended up alone in the woods.

That’s where investigators hit a wall. Additional tests—histological studies and toxicology screening—are still underway, with the cause and manner of death remaining pending. Those results could take weeks, leaving a void that’s been filled with troubling details from her final days.

According to one of Moore’s friends, she’d been acting“paranoid”in the weeks before her disappearance. During a brunch outing, Moore confided that she was scared for her life. Was it anxiety, intuition, or something real? Without toxicology results or answers from the physical exam, no one can say yet.

For now, investigators appear to have more questions than answers. The absence of obvious trauma—usually a roadmap to understanding what happened—has instead become part of the mystery itself. Until those lab results return, Elena Katherine Moore’s death remains one of those cases that haunts a community precisely because it refuses to make sense.
