Mel Gibson Warned Screenwriter About "Spiritual Warfare" Before Writing 'Resurrection of the Christ' Sequel

Mel Gibson’s long-awaited sequel to‘The Passion of the Christ’is finally moving forward, and screenwriter Randall Wallace just shared some fascinating details about how the project got greenlit. During an interview, Wallace revealed that Gibson gave him a spiritual warning before they started writing, telling him the project couldn’t be motivated by money or revenge and that“Satan’s going to come after you.”While it might sound dramatic, Wallace took the warning seriously and committed to nearly a decade of development alongside Gibson and his brother Donal.

The original‘Passion of the Christ’was a cultural phenomenon when it released in 2004, grossing over $610 million worldwide. Gibson has described the sequel as a mission he’s carried for more than 20 years, positioning it as one of the most important stories ever told. Wallace teased that audiences will see“elements people have never seen before”in the resurrection narrative, suggesting this won’t be a standard retelling. The first film will release on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027, with the second part following May 25, 2028.
