If you watched Sunday night’s“The Gilded Age”premiere and did a double take at two men crossing the street, your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you. Those were Matt Damon and David Letterman, appearing as silent, uncredited background extras more than eight minutes into the episode. Damon, 56, wore fake sideburns, a mustache, and a top hat, while Letterman, 79, sported a bowler hat and his famous white beard. Neither spoke a single line, and neither appeared in the credits.

The story behind the cameo is almost better than the cameo itself. Letterman has reportedly wanted to become a background actor for nearly five decades, and his team pitched the idea through HBO to“Gilded Age”creator Julian Fellowes. Somehow, one of the most recognizable talk show hosts in the world ended up as anonymous guy crossing a street in 1880s New York. Even better, Damon has his own background actor history, having worked as an extra alongside Ben Affleck early in his career.

Viewers quickly flooded social media with reactions like“I thought I was seeing things”and“I KNEW IT.”The moment has turned the premiere into a rewatch challenge, with fans scanning every frame for other famous faces hiding in plain sight. New episodes of“The Gilded Age”air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
