Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd Show Divorce Can Still Be Classy

Maren Morris just gave a masterclass in how exes can actually get along. On Father’s Day, the country star took to Instagram Stories to celebrate her ex-husband Ryan Hurd with a throwback photo—shirtless, holding their newborn son Hayes in that sacred skin-to-skin way new dads do. No awkwardness. No shade. Just:“Happy Father’s Day, R.”

It’s the kind of move that sounds simple until you remember how messy divorces usually get. Morris and Hurd were married for five years before separating in late 2022, and their divorce was finalized in January 2024. They share custody of Hayes, who was born in March 2020. But somewhere between the legal paperwork and divided holidays, they made a choice that not everyone in their position makes: respect.

In a June 2025 appearance on the Dear Chelsea podcast, Morris opened up about what coparenting looks like now, more than a year after the divorce was final.“We get along now and have moved past a lot of it,”she said, adding that they’re neighbors and that both put their son above any lingering hurt. That’s not letting-it-go energy—that’s genuine maturity. She acknowledged the pain too:“There is that devastation that two people who love each other that much can’t make it work in the real world.”But she also recognized the win:“I think, ultimately, we both knew it was probably going to be better this way, which is a success.”

What made the adjustment easier? Ironically, Tennessee’s custody court ruling. Having the judge spell out the split schedule in writing took the guesswork—and the emotion—out of co-parenting logistics. No more negotiating who gets Easter. It’s codified, which sounds cold on paper but actually freed them both to focus on Hayes instead of fighting over logistics.

Morris also honored her own father on Father’s Day, keeping the day about celebrating the men who show up. She’s publicly come out as bisexual since the divorce, continuing to live authentically on her own terms. The Father’s Day tribute to Hurd, though, signals something bigger: that she and her ex have genuinely moved into a chapter where they’re not enemies, not awkward acquaintances, but co-parents who actually respect each other. In a celebrity culture obsessed with drama, that’s genuinely refreshing.
