Kevin Pollak stopped byThe Rich Eisen Showand was asked to name the craziest actor he’s ever worked with. His answer came fast: Rip Torn, the late Hollywood legend who died in 2019.“Oh, jeez. It’s not even a competition.”The two worked together on the 1995 comedyCanadian Bacon, which starred John Candy.
According to Pollak, Torn had a routine. Each day he decided someone on the cast or crew was out to get him, and the production just adapted. Torn also liked to mention that he was on Richard Nixon’s enemies list, and no one ever asked what he did to get there. The story that’s blowing up, though, involves co-star Kevin O’Connor and his new bride, who happened to be in the hotel room next to Torn’s at a Toronto Four Seasons. Thin walls, a lot of yelling, and eventually a ranked top ten list of the lines they overheard. The number one entry:“I said milk it like a cow.”
Torn left behind an Emmy forThe Larry Sanders Showand an Oscar nomination forCross Creek, plus enough set stories to fill a book. Pollak’s retelling is the closest we’ll get to a front-row seat.
