Judge Rules Woman Accused in Rihanna and A$AP Rocky Home Shooting Is Fit for Trial

A Los Angeles judge ruled Tuesday that Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, is mentally competent to stand trial for the March shooting at Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s Beverly Hills-area home. The ruling from Judge Maria Cavalluzzi clears the way for the case to move forward, though a trial date has not been set.

Prosecutors allege Ortiz fired at least 20 rounds from an AR-15-style rifle at the property. One round struck a trailer where the couple was inside; another hit a second-story nursery where their three children were with Rihanna’s mother. Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and a dozen other felony charges and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. She had no criminal record before the incident, and investigators have not publicly revealed a motive.

The competency ruling does not determine guilt. It simply means the defendant is considered able to understand the proceedings and assist in her own defense. The case has renewed conversations about celebrity safety, mental health, and gun violence, especially since children were in harm’s way.
