Britney Spears fans hoping for casting news just got a very polite“not yet.”Jon M. Chu, the director behind the Universal Pictures biopic based on Britney’s bestselling 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, said he is not focused on casting at all right now.“We’re just trying to get the story right,”he explained at the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art gala in Los Angeles.
That story is in the hands of screenwriter Liz Meriwether, and Chu had nothing but praise for what he’s seen so far, calling her work incredible, profound, and beautiful. He also noted Meriwether is doing so many beautiful things, adding that he may or may not have gotten glimpses of her pages. Cryptic, but we’ll take it.
Meanwhile, Chu revealed his inbox is flooded with hundreds of unsolicited audition emails from hopefuls who are certain they’re meant to play Britney. No actors have been officially announced, and Chu declined to say whether he has spent time with Spears herself. The project was first announced in 2024 with Chu directing and Marc Platt producing, so the anticipation is very real.
