Jake Short Owns Mistake, Apologizes for Resurfaced Podcast Jab

When old clips resurface online, damage control becomes damage admission—and that’s exactly what Jake Short chose to do this week.

The former Disney Channel star addressed a viral podcast moment that sent Twitter into overdrive after he and ex-fiancée Mika Abdalla announced their split on June 1. The clip, pulled from a 2024 episode of his podcast“The Sit and Chat”with cohost Bradley Steven Perry, caught Short referring to Abdalla as“some bitch”during casual banter. Not exactly the kind of throwaway comment that ages well once it hits social media.

Rather than dodge or deflect, Short took to Instagram Stories early Saturday to eat the L. He called the remark a“disrespectful, juvenile joke”and made clear he knew it crossed a line. The apology landed somewhere between accountable and remorseful—he acknowledged the comment was inappropriate and committed to doing better. That’s the bare minimum, sure, but it’s also the smart move when receipts are already out there.

What complicates the narrative is the joint statement Short and Abdalla released to Us Weekly. They pushed back on speculation their breakup was rooted in disrespect or toxicity, describing their five-year relationship as loving and respectful. The old clip, they said, was“a playful moment”being weaponized by people who didn’t know the full context. That’s the tricky part of resurfaced content—we see a snapshot, not the entire film.

Still, intent and impact aren’t the same thing. A joke can be meant playfully and still land poorly, especially when it’s about someone you were engaged to and that someone didn’t ask for it to be immortalized on a podcast feed. Short’s willingness to step up and own it without making excuses is the right instinct. Whether listeners buy the“just boys being boys”framing is another story entirely.
