Joanna Wietrzyk is owning the most awkward moment of her career. The 24-year-old Australian HYROX athlete went viral after soiling herself during a race in Beijing in September and choosing to keep competing, ultimately winning the event. This week, she posted an Instagram video apologizing to everyone affected by her decision, saying she’s“truly, truly so sorry to everyone that I affected, whether they were spectators or participants out on that race floor.”

The viral clip sparked a bigger conversation about athlete welfare, and HYROX responded by updating its rules, allowing athletes to be withdrawn if blood, vomit, urine, or faeces poses a welfare or contamination risk. Wietrzyk said the situation has been“very hard to navigate”and“very confronting,”while her coach Chris Bayens defended her against what he described as hatred and personal attacks. Now the focus shifts back to racing: she’s set to compete in the Elite 15 division in Hamburg on Friday, 30 October.

So what do you think? Does her decision to keep racing deserve applause, or should officials have pulled her off the floor sooner? Drop your take in the comments.
