When a family decided to sift through the charred remains of their flooded home this week, they stumbled onto an ending nobody expected. Kansas City police now believe they’ve found 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, the suspected gunman behind a terrifying string of highway shootings that claimed at least one life and terrorized drivers across the region.

Sanchez-Munoz had been at the center of a manhunt that intensified dramatically in mid-June. On June 11, he allegedly opened fire at a vehicle in Wyandotte County, Kansas, triggering an outstanding warrant. Five days later, on June 16, the situation escalated when authorities believe he was involved in a series of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri—incidents that allegedly left Jeremy Keenan dead after Sanchez-Munoz crashed his car into a pole following an exchange of gunfire.

The discovery came after an hours-long standoff at a family member’s residence that ended with the home catching fire and subsequently flooding—complications that made an initial thorough search nearly impossible. When the family later combed through the debris themselves and detected the unmistakable smell of decomposition, they contacted authorities. The body they found was clothed in garments matching those believed to be worn by Sanchez-Munoz when he vanished.

Kansas City Police Department Public Information Officer Jake Becchina announced the findings to media on Wednesday, explaining that homicide detectives and the Jackson County Medical Examiner are now working to formally confirm the identity and determine the exact cause of death. While this discovery likely closes a chapter on one of the region’s most alarming crime sprees, it also raises questions about how the confrontation at the family home unfolded and what led to his death in that basement.
