Sanchez-Munoz had been at the center of a manhunt that intensified dramatically in mid-June. On June 11, he allegedly opened fire at a vehicle in Wyandotte County, Kansas, triggering an outstanding warrant. Five days later, on June 16, the situation escalated when authorities believe he was involved in a series of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri—incidents that allegedly left Jeremy Keenan dead after Sanchez-Munoz crashed his car into a pole following an exchange of gunfire.

The discovery came after an hours-long standoff at a family member’s residence that ended with the home catching fire and subsequently flooding—complications that made an initial thorough search nearly impossible. When the family later combed through the debris themselves and detected the unmistakable smell of decomposition, they contacted authorities. The body they found was clothed in garments matching those believed to be worn by Sanchez-Munoz when he vanished.
