Grimes is officially a movie lead, but there was no set, no costume, and no camera. She voices and lends her likeness to Zayinth Alda in“Gods Don’t Give Gifts,”a four-part sci-fi anthology from AI studio Fable and YouTuber Gossip Goblin (Zack London). The film is being advertised as the first fully AI-generated movie to receive a theatrical release, and it opens December 4.
The story follows a disenfranchised aristocrat on Niiro Cradle, a world where bodies are disposable and consciousness has been commoditized. Producer Edward Saatchi says casting Grimes gives audiences a preview of something new for animation, with real vocal performances powering characters that look nothing like the standard Pixar or DreamWorks style. Grimes has been prepping for this moment: she previously released AI software that mimics her voice for creators to use, and she has an AI-themed album,“Psy Opera,”arriving January 22, 2027 (she says that one was made without generative AI).
So this is the big mainstream test: will audiences embrace fully synthetic films, and what does it mean for animators and performers? December 4 will start answering those questions. Are you buying a ticket, or is this where you draw the line?
