Lawton drivers have watched the work move up and down Gore Boulevard for months, and it’s almost finished. The city has upgraded traffic signals at 10 of the 11 planned intersections, with the final installation scheduled for November 12 at 38th Street. That’s the day to build in a few extra minutes if 38th is on your route.
The upgrades include new signal controllers, malfunction management units, and GPS receivers, along with the programming and testing that helps the intersections coordinate with each other. City officials say additional timing adjustments are planned after installation wraps, so the flow along the corridor should keep improving in the weeks that follow.
Looking ahead, the city is exploring a next phase that would add vehicle-detection technology, letting signals respond to real-time traffic instead of fixed timing. The estimate is $34,000 to $35,000 per intersection, and about $394,000 in grant funding is available through the Lawton Metropolitan Planning Organization. Which Gore Boulevard intersection would you most like to see get that technology first?
