George Santos Faces New Federal Heat Over Suspicious Betting Trade

You’d think a convicted felon fresh off a commuted sentence would stay squeaky clean for at least a little while. Apparently, George Santos didn’t get that memo.

The former U.S. Congressman—who already spent 84 days in federal prison before President Trump commuted his sentence—is now under investigation by the Department of Justice for alleged insider trading. And this time, the scheme is almost comically brazen. According to reports from the Associated Press, Santos bragged about attending President Trump’s State of the Union address on February 24. Then he turned around and bet against showing up for it using Kalshi, a regulated financial exchange that lets users trade on the outcomes of future events. That’s the kind of move that screams“I’m not thinking this through.”

Here’s where it gets worse for Santos: Kalshi caught the suspicious trade and reported him to both the DOJ and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the federal regulatory body responsible for overseeing such exchanges. The timing couldn’t be worse for the ex-congressman, either. The CFTC has recently launched a crackdown on insider trading in prediction markets, which means they’re actively hunting for exactly this kind of behavior.

This isn’t Santos’first dance with federal prosecutors. In 2024, he pleaded guilty to fraud and identity theft, charges that earned him a seven-year sentence. That conviction landed in April 2025, but Trump’s commutation in October cut his time drastically short. Now, just months after walking free, he’s back on the feds’radar with allegations that suggest he still hasn’t learned his lesson about exploiting inside information for profit.

The pattern here is hard to ignore. Santos served New York’s 3rd Congressional District for less than a year in 2021, and his entire political career has been marked by deception and financial schemes. Whether the insider trading investigation leads to charges remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear: this guy’s ability to stay out of trouble is about as reliable as his resume was accurate.
