Gary Sinise Explains Why He Stepped Away From Acting to Care for His Son Mac

Gary Sinise is opening up about the reason he pulled back from Hollywood, and it’s a story about family above everything. In a new interview with People, the actor shared that his son Mac was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare bone cancer, in 2018. That same year, his wife Moira Harris was also treated for breast cancer and later declared cancer-free. Two diagnoses hit the family at once, and Sinise made a choice that changed everything.

After 13 Reasons Why wrapped in 2020, he became Mac’s primary caregiver. Mac tried 25 different drugs over four and a half years. He died in January 2024 at 33, with Sinise, Harris and daughters Sophie and Ella at his side.“Family was the priority,”Sinise said, adding that his son“sure showed us grace under fire.”
