“My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments”is out Tuesday, and it opens a window into the hardest year of Eric Dane’s life. According to the book, doctors first told him he had multifocal motor neuropathy, a treatable autoimmune disorder, months before he learned he actually had ALS. He describes shuttling between specialists and undergoing test after test before his primary care physician delivered the news in 2024.

Dane went public with his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 and died in February at 53. In the memoir, he calls the diagnosis a“death sentence”and compares the experience to a horror movie. He also writes about calling ex-wife Rebecca Gayheart right after he found out, promising to look after their daughters and protect them with everything in his body and soul. Billie is 16 and Georgia is 14.

The book arrives as a final statement from an actor people grew up watching, and it’s sparked fresh conversation about how hard rare diseases are to diagnose. Have you ever dealt with a misdiagnosis in your own family? Tell us in the comments.
