Shane Gillis hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend and spent part of his monologue telling the audience that women who wear short shorts to the gym“dress like whores,”complete with a detailed description of neon shorts. The joke landed with some of the room and absolutely nowhere else, because by Sunday morning, celebrities were lining up to respond.

Ego Nwodim, who spent six seasons in the SNL cast, posted an Instagram Story joking that she was a“whore reporting for duty”and was out doing some“heauxing”after her workout. Maren Morris posted a video flipping off the camera over his remarks. Dan Levy offered the sharpest take, writing that short shorts don’t make women whores, but men who call them whores are misogynists, and adding that complacency is what creates an environment where women are sexually assaulted. Gillis has not commented, and neither has SNL, which previously fired him in 2019 within a week of hiring him after racist and homophobic podcast clips resurfaced.

The whole thing has reignited a bigger conversation about comedy, free speech, and where a punchline stops being funny and starts being a judgment about women’s bodies. So we want to know what you think: was this just a comedian pushing buttons, or did he go too far?
