If your kids have been asking why East Side Park’s playground is suddenly blocked off, here’s the story: the City of Lawton is transforming the entire park into the Lawton Fort Sill Sports Plex, and that means the play area is now sitting right in the middle of an active construction zone.
As of June 15, crews are tearing down existing structures, removing sports lighting, and breaking ground on new building foundations. Underground utilities are about to go in, and demolition and excavation work is ramping up across the site. The City says the whole park will remain under construction for the foreseeable future—which means East Side Park is essentially off the table for family outings for a while.
The City has installed additional signage and barriers to keep people out, and officials have even been reaching out directly to folks who’ve ignored the restrictions. It’s a safety issue: an active construction site with heavy equipment and ongoing utility work is no place for kids to play, even if the equipment is still standing.
The good news? Lawton has other parks ready to go. Skyline Park, Sullivan Village Park, MacArthur Park, Prairie Park, and Panther Park are all available for recreation while East Side Park gets its makeover. Parking might be tighter at some of those spots, but they’re open and waiting. City officials are asking residents to be patient and to follow posted signs—and to keep checking the City of Lawton’s Facebook page and GoLawton mobile app for construction updates as the sports complex takes shape.
When it’s done, the Lawton Fort Sill Sports Plex is expected to be a major draw for athletes, families, and visitors. For now, though, it’s hard hats and heavy machinery over playground time at East Side Park.
