Debbie Matenopoulos Wants to Be US Ambassador to Greece: "You Don't Need Qualifications"

Debbie Matenopoulos, the former co-host of“The View,”is openly campaigning to become the next US ambassador to Greece, and she brought a surprisingly specific résumé to the table. She told Page Six that Greek was her first language, that she holds a Greek passport, owns homes in Greece, has written two bestselling Greek cookbooks and runs a Greek skincare line. She says friends have already reached out to Trump on her behalf and insists she is entirely serious about the role.

Her argument is refreshingly blunt. Matenopoulos says ambassadors don’t need political backgrounds, pointing to her 30 years of live television and over 10,000 hours speaking in front of large audiences. She even told Page Six,“No disrespect to Kim. You don’t need any qualifications to be an ambassador to any country.”The current ambassador, Kimberly Guilfoyle, is under pressure after Trump asked her to resign amid allegations she solicited donors to pay personal bills. Guilfoyle has vigorously denied those claims.

So what happens next is anyone’s guess, but the whole thing shines a light on how diplomatic posts actually get filled, and how much celebrity, loyalty and connections play into it. Could a cookbook author realistically land an embassy? Stranger things have happened. Would you take the job if it was offered to you?
