Federal agents executed a search warrant at Hayden Panettiere’s Los Angeles home on August 25, part of an ongoing investigation into the fatal oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl she is believed to have taken. According to reports, investigators were looking for black market drugs, prescription medication, and paraphernalia they can test for fentanyl. The DEA is also reportedly examining years of text messages between Panettiere and an alleged longtime drug dealer, messages described as“very specific about purchasing black market pills.”
Panettiere was 36 when she was found unresponsive at a Greenville, South Carolina Airbnb on August 16. Her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, administered CPR and Narcan; his brother Zach found her. No official cause of death has been released, and Panettiere’s rep says law enforcement has not disclosed who the investigation is targeting.
The case lands in the middle of a much larger crisis. Counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl are behind a rising share of overdose deaths nationwide, and celebrity cases like this one often pull federal resources into the black market supply chain behind them. It also reopens harder conversations about addiction, past domestic violence allegations involving Hickerson, and the toll the entertainment industry can take on young performers.
