The house music world is mourning Cevin Fisher, the New Jersey producer behind two of the biggest club anthems of the late’90s. Fisher died Thursday after a short battle with cancer, just three days after his 63rd birthday. Born Kevin Fisher in East Orange, he landed back-to-back number ones on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart with 1998’s“The Freaks Come Out”and 1999’s“(You Got Me) Burnin’Up,”and those two singles spent a combined 25 weeks on the chart.

His roots run deep in dance music history. Fisher started DJing at just 17 with a residency at Club Zanzibar, the legendary New Jersey venue that helped shape the house sound. From there, he went on to remix icons like Chaka Khan and Quincy Jones, and producer Danny Tenaglia encouraged him to start making original tracks instead of just spinning other people’s. That push changed everything.

Fisher’s music never really left the culture. In 2019, David Guetta released a version of“The Freaks Come Out”under his Jack Back alias with Fisher involved, and it drew close to five million Spotify streams. A 2019 revival, four decades of music, and a legacy that keeps moving dance floors. Which Cevin Fisher track is your all-time favorite?
