Cameron University Theatre is taking on one of the hardest-edged plays in American theater, and doing it in a way you don’t see often.“Glengarry Glen Ross”runs November 19 through 22 in the studio theatre, with every role played by a woman. David Mamet’s Pulitzer-winning script follows real estate salesmen who manipulate, intimidate, and betray each other to survive the pressure of the office, and it’s famous for dialogue most productions play with searing intensity.

Director and Cameron instructor Jean Tartièrre has wanted to try this approach for years. What makes the production unusual is that the characters keep their original names and male pronouns, and the cast isn’t pretending to be men. The goal is to show how identical words and actions land differently when performed by women. The cast features Cameron senior Skylar Edwards as Dave Moss, alumna Victoria Spruill as Richard Roma and costume designer, and Rose Venus as Shelley Levene. Audiences also get the Blake monologue from the 1992 film, a scene not included in the original stage version.

One important note: this production is intended for mature audiences, with frequent profanity and adult themes, and it’s not recommended for anyone under 18. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, with adult tickets at $13. If you go, what do you think the flipped casting will change about how the story hits? Let us know in the comments.
