Billy Joel is opening up about a health battle fans never saw coming. In a new interview on SiriusXM’s Billy Joel Channel, the 77-year-old legend revealed he was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a condition caused by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. His doctors told him that decades of performing loud rock shows was giving him something like a concussion every time he stepped on stage.
Joel admitted he was nervous about surgery, but after learning a brain shunt could help his balance and memory, he went through with it. The result? He says his memory, balance, and overall ability to function have all improved. His last full concert was February 22nd, 2025, when he fell during the show, and he’s only returned to a stage once since, joining a Billy Joel cover band for two songs earlier this year.
There’s still no timetable for a full return to touring, but Joel had a message for the fans who’ve been worried: don’t worry about me, I’m not going anywhere, I’m still here. It’s a reminder that even the icons need to put their health first sometimes. What’s your favorite Billy Joel song of all time? Tell us in the comments.
