Jack White announced on Instagram that his older brother Edward“Eddie”Gillis died Saturday morning after a battle with cancer. In the tribute, White called him“a beautiful soul”who was caring, funny, and generous, and“an amazing big brother.”

Eddie Gillis ran Third Man Pressing, the Detroit vinyl plant White opened in 2017 in the Cass Corridor. He managed it for 10 years, overseeing production of hundreds of thousands of records for other artists. Before that, he worked as a pastry chef at the Ritz-Carlton and Beaumont Hospital. White, the youngest of 10 siblings, credited Eddie with teaching him guitar basics, fishing, and how to drive stick shift.

Gillis is survived by his wife Angie and their children Amelia and Garrett. His story is a big part of the vinyl revival and Detroit’s music scene, but for White it comes down to one line:“I just hate to see him leave, but I’m glad he is at peace.”
