Australia Wants to Kill the Algorithm (Sort Of) and the U.N. Just Fixed the Map

Australia is making moves. After banning under-16s from social media in December 2025, they’re now proposing laws that would force platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X to offer a chronological feed option. Meaning you could finally see posts from the people you actually follow, in real time, without the algorithm deciding what deserves your attention. It’s a massive win for anyone who’s ever wondered why they’re seeing a random influencer’s post at 2 a.m. instead of their best friend’s engagement announcement.

And then there’s the map situation. The U.N. has voted to phase out the Mercator map, that 500-year-old classroom standby that’s been distorting our view of the world the whole time. Africa is actually 14 times larger than Greenland, but on the Mercator map, they look comparable. The Equal Earth Map from 2018 fixes the proportions. Togo brought the resolution. The U.S. was the only country to vote against it, which is honestly a strange hill to die on.
