Zack Snyder Says 300 Is "One of the Gayest Movies Ever Made" and Honestly, He Might Be Right

Zack Snyder is done letting the fascism accusations slide. After his new film The Last Photograph premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to a rough reception, Snyder sat down with Variety and offered up a defense nobody saw coming. Asked about being called a fascist online, he pointed to his 2007 hit 300, calling it“one of the gayest movies ever made.”His follow-up line?“There are few movies where people come in straight and come out gay, and 300 is one of them.”

If you’ve seen 300, you already know exactly what he’s talking about. It’s three hundred Spartans in leather trunks and capes, drenched in slow motion, flexing through an entire war. The internet has made this joke for almost twenty years. But Snyder’s bigger point is about history repeating itself: 300 was booed at the Berlin Film Festival back in the day and got hit with the same fascist label, then went on to become a full-blown cult phenomenon. He’s heard all of this before.

And the plot thickens. Snyder is developing an adaptation of Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, which he’s calling his probable magnum opus, and he fully knows that’s not going to quiet anyone down online. Add in a reported Escape from New York remake and it’s clear Snyder is staying in the conversation whether fans like it or not.
