SNL’s Halloween episode kicked off with a cold open spoofing Nicki Minaj’s support for President Trump. Cast member Saidah Belo-Osagie played the rapper, one week after Minaj joined Trump at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, and threw her support behind Republican candidates Mike Rogers and John James ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.
The sketch’s sharpest moment: Minaj’s character declaring that Trump is“killing it,”then clarifying she means her career. It also placed her in the White House press secretary role, a gag that traces back to a Trump staffer’s real suggestion during an Air Force One trip, which Trump called“a good idea.”In between, Tom Hanks returned as David S. Pumpkins with skeleton sidekicks Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan, before James Austin Johnson’s Trump cut the bit short. Inde Navarrette hosted and Gracie Abrams was the musical guest.
Minaj hasn’t publicly addressed the sketch, and honestly, that silence says a lot. Do you think celebrity endorsements actually move votes, or just give us better SNL material? Drop your take in the comments.
