Western Oklahoma State College in Altus has been awarded a $1,593,701 Strengthening Institutions Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The five-year initiative, called“Pathways to Workforce Success,”will fund a new Career Development Specialist and a dedicated career services space on campus, giving students hands-on help with career advisement, employment assistance and job placement.

WOSC holds a unique spot in Oklahoma history as the oldest original municipal two-year college still operating in the state, and it serves students across a five-county area in southwest Oklahoma. That includes plenty of families connected to Lawton and Fort Sill, where deciding between college, a trade or heading straight into the workforce is a real conversation happening at kitchen tables right now.

President Chad Wiginton said the grant is an investment in students and the future workforce of southwest Oklahoma, adding that the goal is making sure students have the confidence, skills and support to take that next step. The college also plans to strengthen relationships with regional employers and workforce organizations, which could mean more local graduates stepping into local jobs. What career support do you wish you’d had when you were starting out?
