Nirvana is officially receiving the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV VMAs, airing Sunday, September 28 on MTV and CBS. It’s a historic pick: the band is the first rock act to win since Duran Duran in 2003 and the first inactive group to take the honor since The Beatles in 1984. Producer Van Toffler admitted he was stunned Nirvana had never been recognized before, calling Kurt Cobain one of MTV’s most seismic figures.
