Victoria Rowell spent 17 years bringing Drucilla Winters to life on The Young and the Restless, and she’s now sharing why that chapter ended the way it did. In a candid conversation with producer Carlos King, Rowell said she faced retaliation after speaking out about discrimination in daytime. She also alleged that co-star Michelle Stafford spat on her during a 2015 filming incident.

Rowell didn’t stop there. She said she rewrote countless lines of dialogue because the show lacked Black writers, and that she was repeatedly denied opportunities to write, direct, and produce. After leaving the soap in 2007, she sued CBS and producers in 2015. The case ended in a settlement. When she later auditioned for a role on CBS’Beyond the Gates, the part went to Tamara Tunie. Her take on being labeled“difficult”? Simple:“I’ve never stopped working.”

The story lands in the middle of a much bigger conversation about how Black actresses are treated in Hollywood, and how rarely speaking up ends well for the person who does it. For longtime soap fans, it’s personal. Drucilla never got the exit she deserved, and now we may know why. What do you think daytime TV needs to fix first?
