Verity Movie Review: Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Take On Colleen Hoover's Wildest Book

Colleen Hoover’s Verity has been the book everyone argues about for years, and now it’s a movie. Anne Hathaway stars as Verity Crawford, a famous author left catatonic after a car accident, while Dakota Johnson plays Lowen, the younger writer hired to finish Verity’s book series. What Lowen finds instead is a hidden manuscript that paints Verity as a murderous narcissist. From there, the story hits three separate twists, including a faked paralysis, a killing, and a final letter that reveals Jeremy as the true villain.

Directed by Michael Showalter, the film takes Hoover’s most over-the-top novel and streamlines it. Several of the book’s most extreme details are gone, and critics argue the adaptation is stronger for it. It’s the latest in a growing line of Hoover adaptations, following It Ends With Us, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him, so the question of whether Hollywood can nail her books is still very much open.

The real debate now belongs to the fans. Does trimming the chaos make Verity a better story, or does it lose what made the book so addictive in the first place? If you’ve seen it, tell us where you land, book or movie?
