UK Runner Survives Cardiac Arrest in the Snow, Beats the Exact Course Four Years Later

In January 2022, Tommy Price was attempting the Bob Graham Round, a legendary 66-mile, 27,000-foot route over 42 fells in England’s Lake District, when hypothermia sent him into cardiac arrest. His friend Max ran for help, and Keswick Mountain Rescue found Price face down in the snow. Rescue crews tried three times to restart his heart before airlifting him to Royal Victoria Infirmary, where his body temperature had dropped to 18°C. Doctors and rescuers said that extreme cold actually protected his brain and organs from fatal damage.

Price spent five days in an induced coma and months regaining feeling in his hands and feet. He didn’t disappear quietly, though. He ran the London Marathon in 3 hours 10 minutes to raise money for the rescue team that saved his life, and then he set his sights on the Bob Graham Round again. Four years of recovery and preparation later, Price crossed the line and completed the full route, with his friend and one of his original rescuers running alongside him.“I am very lucky to be alive and even luckier to be able to run still,”he said.
