Tyler Perry’s new Netflix film“Doing Life”is officially here, and it comes with a love letter attached. Perry announced on Instagram that the movie is an homage to two nineties classics: 1994’s“Jason’s Lyric”and 1997’s“Love Jones.”He said both films shaped the way he felt after watching them, and“Doing Life”is his way of honoring that legacy.

The film follows Anika, played by Naomi Baker, a mother pulled between her family and a new romance with Carousel, played by Jay Reeves. Carousel is formerly incarcerated, so the story leans hard into redemption and second chances. Cornell Young IV, known for“A Different World,”rounds out the cast as Donovan.

This marks Perry’s third Netflix release this year, and he made sure to thank fans who already tuned in. For anyone who grew up on nineties Black romance cinema,“Doing Life”is a chance to revisit that feeling with a fresh story. Which nineties love movie still lives rent-free in your head? Let us know in the comments.
