Keisha Lance Bottoms made history on Nov. 3 as the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history, and on Friday she revealed the team that will help her take the reins. Called“Georgia’s Promise,”the transition team lists Tyler Perry as a co-chair, alongside Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, former Walgreens CEO Roz Brewer, Carter Center board chair Jason Carter and former nonprofit executive Michelle Nunn. John King, who served as chief operating officer in Bottoms’Atlanta mayoral administration, will oversee transition operations.
Perry’s addition brings an entertainment and business heavyweight into Georgia’s political arena. His Atlanta-based empire has made him one of the state’s most recognizable figures, and his role signals the incoming administration’s focus on drawing big-name talent from across sectors. Bottoms said her priorities are affordability, health care and public education, with a simple mission statement:“Our goal is simple: to be ready to govern on day one.”
The win marks a major political shift for Georgia. Bottoms is the first Democrat to win the governorship since 1998, and she confirmed she has spoken with outgoing Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who offered assistance for a smooth transfer of power. With the team announced, the real work begins.
