Tinashe just hit a career milestone that took over a decade to reach. Her new album‘Popstar’debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, her highest-charting album ever, moving 35,500 equivalent album units with 22,000 in pure sales. Both numbers are personal bests for the singer, who first broke through in 2014 with‘2 On’.

The road back to the top wasn’t a straight line. After leaving her major label, Tinashe went independent and rebuilt her fanbase from the ground up. Then 2024’s‘Nasty’exploded on social media, returning her to the Hot 100 after a decade. Earlier this year, her Disco Lines collab‘No Broke Boys’peaked at No. 36, giving her a first top 40 hit since‘2 On’. Now signed with Nice Life Recordings in partnership with Atlantic, she and manager Simonne Solitro crafted a rollout built on early teasers, striking visuals, collector-grade vinyl variants, and a long-term marketing strategy that paid off big.

Solitro, who is Billboard’s Executive of the Week, put the philosophy simply: variants alone don’t sell records, the music and the story have to give fans something worth talking about. It’s a masterclass in the modern album rollout, and it proves an independent artist can out-chart their own major-label era. Are you streaming‘Popstar’yet?
