Erik von Detten, best known to a generation as Josh Bryant in The Princess Diaries, is being sued for alleged fraud and elder abuse. Sheila Greenberg, 85, and Norman Greenberg, 97, claim $900,000 in damages. They say they invested about $2.1 million in Lady Liberty gold coins through Rosland Capital, a precious metals company where von Detten worked starting in 2018, and that the coins were actually worth about $1.3 million. The suit also claims the couple’s coins were sent to a warehouse rather than delivered, and that von Detten spent another $1 million of their money on coins.
The case is civil, and the allegations have not been proven in court. The complaint names Rosland Capital as well as von Detten. The couple’s attorney says the coins were sold at a heavy markup, according to the lawsuit. Von Detten’s representatives have not issued a public comment reported at the time of this article.
This one is a reminder to check in with older family members about any investment pitches they receive, especially ones that sound like sure things. What would you do if a relative told you they had bought nearly two million dollars in gold coins? Let us know on our socials.
