Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige is returning to theaters on January 29th, 2027, and it’s getting something it never had the first time around: a 70mm IMAX release. The 2006 film, starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as rival magicians locked in an obsession-fueled war of sabotage, arrives just over 20 years after its original debut. Audiences without access to 70mm IMAX can also catch it in 35mm and 2D Digital formats.
If you’ve only experienced The Prestige on a laptop, you’re missing the point. Nolan built the film around practical-effects spectacle and misdirection, and a large-format presentation is basically the way it was always meant to be seen. The story follows showman Robert Angier and illusionist Alfred Borden, whose partnership ends in disaster and spirals into a rivalry full of deceit. The film’s tagline,“Nothing is as it seems, so watch closely,”remains one of the most accurate warnings in movie history.
Can’t wait until 2027? The 4K Ultra HD version is available now on Amazon, so there’s no excuse to go another two decades without seeing it. Whether you’re a longtime Nolan devotee or a first-timer who’s somehow avoided spoilers, this revival is shaping up to be one of the year’s best specialty theater events.
