The Girl Who Cycled 700 Miles in 2020 Has a Message for Everyone Who Shared Her Story

In 2020, with India under lockdown and no transport running, 15-year-old Jyoti Kumari cycled more than 700 miles from Gurugram to Bihar with her injured father on the back of a twenty-dollar bicycle. The seven-day journey made her a global symbol of resilience almost overnight, and with the attention came promises: cycling training, an education, cash support.

Six years later, Kumari says most of those promises were never kept. Her father, Mohan Paswan, died of a heart attack in May 2021. The family did use what money actually arrived to finish their brick house, complete with a toilet, bathroom and running water. But Kumari, now 22, still hasn’t passed her Class 12 final exam, and there are days, she says, when the family goes to sleep hungry. Her words cut deep:“When you’re poor, fame doesn’t help. Only education can help you out of your difficulties.”

It’s a rare follow-up on a story most of us only remember as a moment of hope. It also raises an uncomfortable question about viral heroism: what do we owe the people we celebrate, once the algorithm moves on? Her younger sister is now the family’s hope, set to take her Class 12 exams in mid-2027. If Kumari’s story moved you back then, does it move you now? Tell us in the comments.
