Drive down NW Hilltop Drive and you’ll spot it before you spot the address: a purple two-story home with a fire-breathing dragon in the front yard, a handmade fountain around it, and a miniature Ferris wheel nearby. Locals call it“That House On Hilltop.”Owner Justin Hackney, who also runs Lawton’s historic Vaska Theatre, builds most of it himself, and back in September he announced he was done with cheap plastic commercial decor in favor of pieces he makes by hand. Many of those will become permanent fixtures at 909 NW Hilltop Dr.
Hackney says night is the best time to see the house in all its glories, so an after-dark drive is your best bet. If you stop and walk the property, stay in front of the fountain, and park on the street rather than the grass so the yard and the neighbors stay in good shape.
On Halloween night, the house hosts a Safe House block party with food, drinks and music. It’s free and family-friendly, and attendees are asked to bring candy to pass out to trick-or-treaters. With Fort Sill families and folks from all over Lawton expected, it’s shaping up to be one of the safest spots in town to spend the evening. So, are you planning to swing by before Halloween, or are you waiting for the block party?
